Geometric Functional Analysis and Probability Seminar
Doron Shafrir
will speak on
Axioms of Symmetry: Throwing random darts at the real line.
Abstract: This talk presents a paper of Chris Freiling, on which David Mumford said:
``Why his theorem is not universally known and considered on a par with the
results of Goedel and Cohen, I do not know."
It contains intuitive arguments based on the symmetry in a thought experiment
throwing darts at the real line. This basic from probability implies that the
Continuum Hypothesis is false (this cannot be proved mathematically).
The Axiom of Choice is also discussed in the light of probabilistic arguments.
The lecture will take place in the Lecture Hall, Room 1, Ziskind Building
on Wednesday, Jan 3, 2007 16:00 - 18:00
Note the unusual day
Note change in venue. All the following GFAP seminars will be held in Room 1.
