Interested in doing physics that's both interesting, challenging, and relevant to our lives on earth? Consider joining as a MA or Ph.D. student to the climate dynamics research group at the Department of Environmental Sciences. You will be involved in research projects such as: studying the chaotic behavior of El-Nino; dynamics of the oceanic "thermohaline" circulation and its effect on global climate; The physical mechanism leading to the occurrence of ice ages every 100,000 years, mechanisms of past and future abrupt climate change, warm climates of the past and future, flow and dynamics of ice in Greenland and Antarctica and its role in climate. The work involves a variety of tools and approaches from the use of simple physical models and analytic theoretical methods, via numerical simulations of simple and complex models, and the use of data and data analysis. Ideal preparation for this type of research work is an undergraduate degree in physics.
