In the fall of 2023, the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science (ACWIS) held a special celebration at the Pasadena, California home of Dr. Ellen and Harvey Knell.
At the gathering, friends enjoyed entertainment, learned about groundbreaking Weizmann science, and most importantly, commemorated Ellen and Harvey receiving the Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa.
The honorary degrees, the highest level of recognition awarded by the Institute, had been bestowed during a ceremony on campus in 2022, honoring the Knells for their leadership, friendship, and extraordinary contributions to the Weizmann Institute, scientific discovery, and humanity.
Pillars of the Weizmann family for 30 years and members of the President’s Circle, Ellen and Harvey have supported myriad efforts to advance basic research, such as the creation of the Knell Family Professorial Chair, held by Prof. Yardena Samuels in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology, and the establishment of the Knell Family Center for Microbiology, headed by Prof. Rotem Sorek from the Department of Molecular Genetics.
A distinguished and innovative businessman, Harvey was recognized for his philanthropic leadership, which has helped guide the Weizmann Institute and American Committee.
He was elected as a Life Member of the Weizmann International Board in 2019. For the American Committee, he has served as a National Board member, 75th anniversary Campaign Chair, Vice Chair of Financial Resource Development, and currently as Chair of the National Board. A prominent executive and influential community leader, Harvey is President of KCB Management, which he founded in 1986.
Dr. Ellen Knell, an invaluable friend and advocate for the Weizmann Institute and ACWIS, was honored for her professional achievements, commitment to the field of cancer genetics, and devotion to the Jewish people and Israel.
A geneticist specializing in cancer-risk assessment, she completed her undergraduate work at the University of California, Berkeley before earning her master’s and doctoral degrees from UCLA. She worked at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and is currently in private practice. Dr. Knell remains a champion for multiple organizations in scientific research, cancer care, children’s health, Jewish culture, education, and the arts.
Ellen and Harvey’s sons Ed and Peter wrapped up the evening by thanking their parents for building a legacy rooted in the values of Jewish philanthropy and maintaining infectious enthusiasm for giving with true joy and purpose. This blueprint for leading a full, meaningful, and adventurous life now inspires and guides multiple generations of the Knell family.
