Good vibes only at Zappa

The WeizmannVibe club of the Israeli Association of Friends of the Weizmann Institute of Science held a festive end-of-year event in December at Zappa Midtown in Tel Aviv. Guests enjoyed dinner and drinks, a lecture from Prof. Ravid Straussman on the latest in cancer research, and a performance by musician Raviv Kaner. Prof. Straussman thanked members of WeizmannVibe whose donations supported the acquisition of a fluorescence- activated cell sorting (FACS) machine for his lab in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology. A specialized type of flow cytometry, this advanced technology employs a sophisticated method of gathering information about individual cells in order to observe various features, such as size, complexity, and health. More specifically, and as relates to cancer research, the FACS machine enables scientists to characterize immune cells and the presence of bacteria in tumors. Following Prof. Straussman’s talk at the event, some WeizmannVibe members who wanted to learn more about his work organized a visit to his lab and even brought their kids along!
