Powder Preparation

The preparation of homogeneous powders often is the first step of the synthesis process, requiring precise weighing, thorough mixing, and multiple rounds of pre-reaction and re-grinding.

Mixer (Retsch MM400) for grinding small amounts of material to medium fine grain size. The agate lined cups are charged with powder and agate spheres.

Planetary mill (Retsch PM200) for grinding medium amounts of to very small grain size. The agate lined cups are charged with powder and agate spheres.

Mortar grinder (Retsch RM200) for grinding large amounts of material, as is typically required for feed rods for TSFZ crystal growth.

This modified arbor press is extremely useful to crush prereacted powders into sufficiently small pieces before they can be loaded into any of the grinders.

... and then there is the good old manual mortar grinder, the sample grower's "best friend".
