Mechanisms of biological mineralization

Mineral formation by unicellular organisms is an iconic example for the ability of biology to control the properties of inorganic materials. In our research we combine materials science questions with investigations of the intracellular environment of living cells. We strive to understand the cellular pathways of the inorganic mineral constituents, from seawater to the final material. Such an achievement will enable rational design of genetically engineered smart materials, which need only sunlight for their production.
