What is the first step in the application process?
  • The first step is to reach out to researchers at MPG (see list of institutions) and WIS  to discuss potential collaborative projects for which researchers from both institutions can serve as joint hosts.
What is the duration and structure of the program?

The program lasts for four years, with an equal split of two years each at the Max Planck Society (MPG) in Germany and the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) in Israel. Fellows experience research across both institutions, allowing for a well-rounded postdoctoral experience.

How does the application process work?

The program has two applications cycles a year. Following the application, a joint selection process will be conducted by both institutions.

Who is eligible to apply based on citizenship?

Candidates of any nationality are welcome to apply, provided they meet the eligibility criteria outlined on the program page.

Do I need to be physically in Germany or Israel during the program?

Yes, you must be physically present at either the Weizmann Institute of Science or an MPG institute as indicated in your application regarding the planned research split.

Is support provided for the relocation of family members?

Yes, relocation expenses are covered by the host institution to which the fellow is relocating, up to twice during the program (with a minimum of 18 months between relocations). The coverage amounts to 1500 euros per relocation for single fellows and 3000 euros for fellows with spouses or families. Additionally, during their time at WIS, postdocs receive full family health insurance, a nursing care subsidy, vacation days, and access to subsidized housing.

Am I eligible to apply for this program if I completed my PhD more than 4 years ago?

A Postdoc position in Israel is limited to within eight years from the date of receiving the PhD. The status as a Postdoc remains active throughout the entire duration of the program, including the period spent in MPG, as it is a joint program. Under certain conditions exceptions can be made, but this requires special approval by the program committee.

Can I spend the whole four years at one institution only?

No, this is not possible. The program is meant as a joint program and the time of the position will have to be split equally amongst both institutions. However, the time distribution is flexible upon approval of the program committee.

If accepted, when does the program start? Is it possible to start later next year?

The intention is that the Postdoc will start their position between March and September for the winter application deadline and between September and the following March for the summer application deadline. A later start is possible upon special approval.

Are there any restrictions on international applicants for the Joint Postdoc Program?

No, there are no restrictions. The program is aimed at international applicants.

Is there more than a yearly call?

There are two calls a year. Typically one before the winter holidays, with results by the end of January, and one in early summer with results by the end of July.

Are there any age restrictions for the Joint MPG-WIS Postdoc program?

There are no age restrictions.

Is a recommendation letter from the host professor necessary for the application process?

Yes, this is obligatory. The supervisor will have to confirm that they would be willing to host you for the duration of the program and ensure the funding finances of the position as well. This can be a joint letter from the supervisors of both institutions (MPI and WIS).
