In any commercial offering, even with the greatest care, problems
can sometimes slip by, as is the case with a number of known issues
and limitations in the Box service.
As opposed to unknown bugs, these are generally well-documented,
and can at times be dealt with via proposed interim solutions.
This page lists all of the known issues we are currently aware of,
details the risks associated with these known issues, and offers
potential workarounds.
Note that the table below will be maintained on a dynamic basis. Known
issues that have permanently been resolved will eventually be taken off
the list. Open issues, on the other hand, and any other relevant highlights
and clarifications on Box service limitations that do not necessarily constitute
bugs will be added for your reference.
Known Issue | Status | Risk(s) | Workaround | Reference |
---|---|---|---|---|
Box sync client window grayed out and unresponsive on Mac OS. When double-clicked, the Box Sync installer gets stuck indefinitely, and nothing happens. |
Unresolved. | No synchronization being performed. | Change the proxy setting on Mac OS. | |
Problem uploading folders on Box via Safari on Mac OS. When attempting to upload a folder via Safari on the Mac, Folder Uploader shows up on Box, though presents an empty file directory. |
Functionality by design. Folder Uploader is a Java applet, and the latest version of Safari on Mac OS blocks Java applets from accessing local hard drive files by default. |
Using the proposed workaround to allow the Box Folder Uploader to operate in Safari's Unsafe Mode can present a data security risk. |
Enable Unsafe Mode in Safari's Security Preferences (for maximum content security, we strongly recommend that you enable Unsafe Mode for trusted applications only). For detailed instructions on enabling Unsafe Mode in Safari for a Java plug-in, see the Apple support site. |

Problem deleting local Box Sync folders.* When a folder is deleted from Box Sync (the local synchronization folder), it is deleted locally yet retained online on Box (the sync is basically terminated). |
Resolved. |
Potential mismatch between local and online Box folders. | Perform folder deletion online, via Box on the Web. | Description of issue on Box support site |
Users logged into Box without having entered credentials. For proper logout from Box, users must close all open browser tabs. Should a single tab stay open, the last used account will remain accessible, even to users not having entered their credentials. |
Resolved. | Unauthorized users could access Box accounts previously logged into by others, particularly on public computers. | Close the browser, along with all open tabs (issue resolved, workaround no longer necessary). | 601134 |
Problem uploading folders via drag & drop in Chrome.
When a folder contains more than 100 files, only the first 100 are uploaded, and the rest are ignored. No warning message is issued. |
Resolved. | Users remain unaware that some files have not been uploaded to Box. Data loss may occur should users delete these files from local storage. | Upload the relevant folder using a browser other than Chrome (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox) or via Box Sync. | 609749 |
* Moving (or cutting and pasting) folders does not terminate Box synchronization. Folder locations are simply updated and synchronization continues uninterrupted, as prior to the move.
