An advantage to using Dropbox at the Weizmann Institute is that many more kinds of data can be securely stored than with commercial cloud storage services. When security is a priority, store your data on Dropbox.

Data Classification

Weizmann Institute data can be divided up into the following three main categories:

  • Public - Public data is intended for distribution to the general public, both internal and external, and its release should have minimal to no negative impact on the Institute. Public Weizmann Institute data may always be stored on Dropbox.
  • Internal/controlled - Internal, controlled data is intended for distribution within the Institute only, generally to defined subsets of its user base. Release of this data can be moderately damaging to the Institute, with potential negative impact including legal and academic risks (such as loss or alteration of intellectual property), and financial and/or intangible damages (such as reputation erosion). Internal, controlled Weizmann Institute data may in most cases be stored on Dropbox, too.
  • Restricted - Restricted data is data, which the Institute is under legal, regulatory, policy-related or contractual obligation to protect. Access to restricted data must strictly be controlled and logged. Release of such data has the potential to inflict major damages on the Institute, including legal and academic risks (such as loss or alteration of intellectual property), and financial and/or intangible damages (such as reputation erosion). Some restricted Weizmann Institute data may be stored on Dropbox.

Always consult the Weizmann Institute’s Information Security team prior to storing internal/controlled or restricted data on Dropbox.
