WG1 - Gauge/Gravity Duality
Group Leader:
Prof. Johanna Erdmenger (DE)
Vice Leader:
Prof. Tassos Petkou (EL)
Gauge/gravity duality, which generalises the original AdS/CFT correspondence, is one of the most innovative areas of current research in theoretical physics. It provides a framework for obtaining new insights into strongly coupled quantum field theories using weakly coupled gravitational techniques and has also lead to new insights into string theory and to black hole physics.
A major goal of WG1 will be to model strongly coupled systems motivated by real world systems. One direction is to further study the phase diagram and properties of QCD-like theories at finite density. Another will be to apply holographic techniques with a view to making contact with condensed matter systems. Quantum critical points, including non-relativistic systems with exotic scaling, and novel non-Fermi liquids will be studied. WG1 will also use holographic techniques to model non-equilibrium processes, including quantum quenches, which are relevant both to condensed matter as well as heavy-ion data from RHIC and LHC accelerators.
The most well understood example of AdS/CFT is provided by maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four spacetime dimensions. In recent years it has been appreciated that this theory possesses profound integrability structures, allowing one to compute various physical observables exactly. Further studying these structures and generalising them to other theories with less supersymmetry and in different spacetime dimensions will be another goal of WG1. We will also work on understanding better the correspondence between gravitational theories containing light higher spin fields and their dual field theories.

Black Holes and Quantum Information
The Weizmann Institute of Science Rehovot, Israel
EventBlack Holes and Quantum InformationLocation The Weizmann Institute of Science Rehovot, Israel January 12, 2014 - January 17, 2014 Understanding quantum aspects of black holes has been a driving problem in theoretical physics for the last 40 years, and has led to a deeper understanding of gravity. At the same time, some fundamental problems remain unanswered such as the fate of the infalling observer. The workshop will cover recent progress in black hole physics, and in particular the usage of quantum information theory. The workshop follows the Jerusalem winter school on quantum information.

School on Contemporary Methods in Quantum Field Theory
Technion Haifa, Israel
EventSchool on Contemporary Methods in Quantum Field TheoryLocation Technion Haifa, Israel May 25, 2014 - May 29, 2014 Quantum field theory is the underlying theoretical framework by which we understand particle physics, string theory, and certain aspects of condensed matter systems. While it is, by now, a well established canonical field in physics, novel developments during the last couple of years have led to original and stimulating progress in our understanding of quantum field theory both at a fundamental level as well as from a more applicative viewpoint. In this school, leading experts will provide an exposition of the most recent developments in the field which will allow students to delve into current research topics.
Topics to be covered include: dualities and phases of supersymmetric gauge theories, N=2 supersymmetric theories, integrability and localization, the conformal bootstrap program, on-shell amplitudes, Chern Simons matter (vector) theories, and trace anomalies. Challenges to Quantum Field Theory in HIgher Dimensions
Technion Haifa, Israel
EventChallenges to Quantum Field Theory in HIgher DimensionsLocation Technion Haifa, Israel June 28, 2015 - July 02, 2015 Conformal field theories in 5 and 6 dimensions cannot be formulated directly in terms of a Lagrangian, and must be studied indirectly by other means. In both cases the theories are defined as UV limits of five- dimensional (non-conformal) gauge theories. Non-perturbative tools developed in recent years for supersymmetric gauge theories have been extremely useful in elucidating some of the properties of these CFT’s. In parallel, there have been several interesting developments on their supergravity description. The purpose of the proposed workshop is to bring together researchers working on 5d and 6d quantum field theories and AdS/CFT, to share their ideas both on the study of the higher-dimensional conformal field theories, and on the search for the corresponding higher-dimensional AdS solutions in supergravity and to expose interested researchers to this rapidly developing subject. Holography and Dualities 2016: New Advances in String and Gauge Theory
Nordita Stockholm, Sweden
EventHolography and Dualities 2016: New Advances in String and Gauge TheoryLocation Nordita Stockholm, Sweden March 30, 2016 - April 22, 2016 The holographic duality has provided new insights into the physics of strongly-coupled systems by bridging together different subjects that before were thought to be completely unrelated, such as hydrodynamics and physics of black holes, string theory and strongly-coupled phenomena in condensed-matter physics, integrable systems and and non-perturbative behavior of gauge fields. Symmetries have played an important role in these developments and have led to development of new non-perturbative methods based for example on integrability, bootstrap and localization.
The aim of the program is to discuss new developments in dualities and holography, with focus on
- Gauge/string dualities
- Integrability
- Symmetries in string theory
- Supersymmetric localization
- Bootstrap methods
- Applications of holography in QCD and condensed-matter systems
