Admissions and Requirements

What are the academic requirements for admission to the MD-PhD program?

 

Applicants must have a bachelor's or master's degree in science with a minimum average grade of 85. Additionally, core science courses with a minimum grade of 80 are required (valid for up to 10 years).

 

Who is eligible to apply?

 

Applications are accepted only from Israeli citizens or permanent residents.

 

Is proficiency in Hebrew required?

 

Yes, applicants with overseas high school and bachelor’s diplomas must pass the YAEL Hebrew proficiency test unless they meet specific exemption criteria.

 

How many times can I apply to the program?

 

Candidates may apply up to three times. After three unsuccessful attempts, they are not permitted to apply again.

 

When will final admission decisions be made?

 

Successful candidates will be notified by the end of July.

 

 

 

Program Structure and Curriculum

Is there a preparatory course before the program begins?

 

Yes, a Preparatory Programming Class covering Python, Statistics and R will be held from August 31 to September 18, 2025. This course ensures all students enter the program with essential programming skills.
The course is mandatory for applicants who:
•    Have not completed a Python and R programming course within the last three years, and
•    Did not achieve a grade of 80 or higher in such courses.
For other applicants, attendance is optional but encouraged.
 

Can students choose their field of study for the PhD component?

 

Yes, MD-PhD students can select their field of study from over 286 labs across the Weizmann campus. This includes diverse fields such as life sciences, physics, computer science, and more, allowing students to pursue interdisciplinary research that aligns with their interests and career goals.

 

How is the MD-PhD program structured?

 

The MD-PhD program spans 7.5 years, during which students complete medical training, medical research education, clinical rotations, and a comprehensive PhD research component. The curriculum is designed to be integrated and synergistic, ensuring students gain both in-depth medical knowledge and advanced research skills.

 

 

Financial Support and Scholarships

Is financial support available for students?

 

Yes, the program offers a monthly stipend and no tuition, allowing students to focus on their studies and research without financial stress. The program also provides additional support for specific needs, such as maternity leave, military duty, or prolonged illness.

 

 

Are there external fellowships?

 

Yes, students may apply for external fellowships, which can replace or supplement the regular stipend up to 120% of the Weizmann fellowship.
