The National Center for High School Biology Teachers was founded in 1994, and since 2014 it is operated and managed by the Department of Science Teaching at the Weizmann Institute of Science.
The purpose of the center is to assist the professional development of high school biology teachers. This objective is carried out through bridging current biological research and current knowledge about the teaching and learning of biology in the science education research field, while creating a participatory and supportive environment for the teachers’ community. Over the years, the center hosted a wide range of in-service professional development activities: courses for leading teachers, seminars for updating teachers’ scientific knowledge, numerous in-service professional development courses in accordance with teachers' requests from the field. In addition, every year, the center team organizes the summer activities for the biology teachers, with 3 days of lectures from the country's leading scientists who provide teachers with information on contemporary scientific innovations, and a one-day biology teachers' annual conference where teachers have the opportunity to share innovative instructional means with each other in teacher-to-teacher workshops. Every year, a variety of learning and teaching materials are developed by the center team and two issues of the journal "Shmurat Teva" (the Israeli Biology Teachers’ Journal) are published (in Hebrew).
